15 month old Marcus* was born premature and with a disorder known as Short-Gut Syndrome. After a few months, his liver began to fail and it became apparent that he would need a liver and bowel transplant. Unfortunately, no hospitals in this area could perform this procedure. So after many months of waiting for a match, Marcus and his parents traveled to Washington, DC for the surgery.
Marcus’ parents, Lisa and Warren, exemplify the saying “when the going gets tough, the tough get going”. They have been a source of unwavering support for their son, helping him to keep his little body fighting.
Since Marcus had to remain in the Washington area since the surgery, both parents had to reduce their work hours significantly to be with Marcus and also care for their other three children. As they have traveled through many ups and downs, this family remains strong and hopeful.
Lisa said that when she found out about Fred’s Footsteps it was as if “all her prayers had been answered.” Through our program, this family has received aid so that they can be fully prepared for their son’s return home.
